They say “A bird in the hand, is worth two in the Bush”… well how does it apply to the Corncrake .
With a Latin name, Crex crex, similar to its song, the Traonach “as gaeilge” is an exceptionally rare sight to behold.
So you can imagine my awe & wonder, when on a recent photo expedition, the kerrx-kerrx sound of this summer visitor, took me completely by surprise .
Though noted as a “floppy Flier”, this bird travels 10,000km to summer in Ireland from its wintering grounds of south-eastern Africa. Yes, you are reading correctly – Africa.
And when the male sings, for it is only the male, that sings this song – he is looking for a mate.
